The Role: At General Motors, the Senior Engineering Manager β Virtual Test Platforms plays a pivotal leadership role in advancing GMβs transformation into a software-defined, customer-centric mobility company. This position focuses on virtual embedded systems , including virtual mechatronics, digital twin technology, virtual prototyping, and integrated mechanical-electrical-software platforms that enable next-generation vehicle development. You will lead engineering teams responsible for designing and delivering virtual test environments and mechatronic integration frameworks . This role requires a blend of technical depth, strategic vision, and people leadership to ensure GM remains at the forefront of innovation in electrification, autonomy, and connected vehicle ecosystems. What Youβll Do: Lead and Develop Teams: β’ Manage and engineering team and/or managers specializing in virtual mechatronics and simulation technologies. β’ Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning. Drive Technical Strategy: β’ Define and execute engineering roadmaps for virtual mechatronics platforms aligned with GMβs enterprise architecture and product development goals. β’ Champion adoption of digital twin technology, virtualized testing environments, and model-based design practices. Deliver Scalable Solutions: β’ Ensure delivery of high-quality, reliable virtual simulation environments and mechatronic integration tools. β’ Oversee system performance, scalability, and cost optimization for virtual engineering platforms. Cross-Functional Collaboration: β’ Partner with product development, software engineering, hardware teams, and suppliers to enable seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and software systems. β’ Drive alignment between virtual and physical validation processes. Operational Excellence: β’ Establish best practices for virtual engineering workflows, including simulation lifecycle management, CI/CD for models, and data governance . β’ Lead incident reviews and continuous improvement for virtual platform reliability. Talent Strategy: β’ Support workforce planning and succession strategies for emerging technical roles in mechatronics and simulation. β’ Mentor technical leaders and engineers to build future-ready capabilities. Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) β’ Bachelorβs degree in Software engineering, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or related field β’ 10+ years of experience in Software Engineering, with 3+ years in leadership roles managing technical teams. β’ Proven experience in MCU/low-level firmware systems and virtualization platforms β’ Strong understanding of multi-domain integration (mechanical, electrical, software) and virtual validation workflows. β’ Ability to balance technical depth with leadership and business execution. β’ Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) β’ Experience with digital twin platforms, MBSE tools (e.g., Siemens Teamcenter, Dassault CATIA), and simulation software . β’ Background in large-scale, mission critical systems or advanced R&D environments. β’ Familiarity with cloud-based virtualization environments and high-performance computing. β’ Demonstrated success leading teams through virtualization and digital transformation initiatives . Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies. Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate. β’ The salary range for this role is ($216,000 and $331,000).
