Job Title: Remote Construction Accounting Controller (100% Work From Home)
Location: Remote from Latin America
Position Type: Full-time
Salary: $3,000 - 5,000 USD/month depending on experience paid via Deel
Schedule: Monday - Friday, business hours Central Time
Job Overview:
Our client is a vertically integrated real estate development company based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They do architecture, construction, and development under one roof-building human-centered, craft-forward, walkable places intended for long-term stewardship. They currently operate 8+ LLCs across multiple SPVS (special purpose vehicles), with active projects including small apartments and infill pocket neighborhoods, boutique mixed-use, and townhome communities.
They are a small team (7 people) that punches well above their weight through disciplined systems, Al-forward operations, and relentless focus on quality. They need a Controller who can own the financial and operations backbone of the company so that leadership can focus on development, design, and growth.
This is not a bookkeeping role. We need someone who can think at the level of a Controller-owning the full financial operations function across multiple entities-while still being willing to do hands-on transactional work in QuickBooks Online. You will be the single point of accountability for the accuracy, compliance, and reporting integrity of our financial operations.
You will work directly with the CEO on financial strategy, reporting, and compliance-and with the Director of Architecture & Construction on project cost management, subcontractor compliance, and pay applications. This role has a clear path to growing with the company as they scale.
Responsibilities
- Financial Operations Management
- Own and manage accounting operations across multiple legal entities (SPVs).
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure clean financial reporting across all entities.
- Oversee bookkeeping functions while operating at a Controller-level strategic perspective.
- Deliver monthly financial reporting packages and maintain reconciled books. Construction Accounting
- Manage and oversee job costing, project accounting, and construction financial workflows.
- Handle AIA billing, draw requests, and retention tracking.
- Maintain documentation for lien waivers and subcontractor payments.
- Support compliance with construction-specific financial requirements. Financial Controls & Process Development
- Design and implement internal financial controls appropriate for a growing organization.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for recurring financial processes.
- Implement approval workflows and spending thresholds.
- Identify gaps in financial processes and implement improvements. Compliance & Financial Administration
- Manage workers' compensation and general liability audit preparation.
- Oversee 1099 preparation and subcontractor compliance.
- Coordinate with banks, insurance providers, auditors, and external partners as needed.
- Ensure compliance with US accounting practices. Systems & Technology
- Manage financial systems such as QuickBooks Online in a multi-entity environment.
- Support adoption of modern accounting workflows and process automation.
- Provide recommendations for tools and system improvements to enhance operational efficiency. Qualifications, Skills, and Key Competencies
- 7-10 years of accounting or finance experience
- Direct construction accounting experience (non-negotiable)
- Experience working with US-based companies and US accounting practices
- Demonstrated experience managing accounting across multiple entities
- Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online
- Deep knowledge of:
- Job costing
- AIA billing
- Retention tracking
- Lien waivers
- Construction draw requests
- Experience preparing for workers' compensation and liability audits
- Experience managing 1099 preparation and subcontractor compliance
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Ability to operate independently and manage multiple deadlines
- Nice to Have:
- Experience working remotely for US-based construction or real estate companies
- Familiarity with US lien laws and construction payment processes
- Experience working with SPV or multi-entity real estate structures
- Exposure to investor reporting (Reg D environments)
- Accounting degree or professional credential
- Experience working with AI-assisted workflows or automation tools
- What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)
- Days 1-30: Complete onboarding across all entities. Map every QBO file. Identify the top 5 process gaps. Produce first clean set of reconciliations.
Days 31-60: Own the weekly accounting meeting preparation independently. Deliver first monthly financial package. Begin building compliance calendar and sub insurance tracker.
Days 61-90: All entities reconciled and current. SOPs drafted for core processes. First audit prep materials assembled. Austin is no longer in the weeds on any routine financial operations.
