- What We Look For In a ACT English Tutor
- Advanced Grammar & Rhetoric Mastery: Deep knowledge of standard English conventions (punctuation, grammar, sentence structure), production of writing (topic development, organization), and knowledge of language (word choice, style, tone). Ability to explain comma rules, subject-verb agreement, modifier placement, transition effectiveness, and rhetorical strategy for 75 questions in 45 minutes.
- Strategic Editing & Reasoning Skills: Skilled at teaching systematic error identification, conciseness principles, and rhetorical question strategies. Guides students through passage organization, sentence addition/deletion decisions, tone consistency, and parallel structure. Emphasizes reading for grammar errors first, then rhetorical effectiveness, with fast pacing strategies for time management.
- Test Strategy & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with ACT English question types, common grammar traps (comma splices, fragments, wordiness), and passage difficulty progression. Adapts instruction using grammar drills, rhetorical analysis practice, and edited passages to build recognition speed. Requires minimum ACT English score of 31 and experience improving language arts subscores efficiently.
- Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
