ABOUT iPromo
iPromo is a fast-growing promotional products and branded merchandise distributor. We serve enterprise clients, government agencies, and mid-market companies across the U.S., providing everything from branded apparel and hard goods to full-service company stores and kitting/fulfillment solutions. We are in an aggressive growth phase, expanding our apparel and hard goods business lines. We need a Controller who thrives in a high-growth B2B distribution environment and can build the financial infrastructure to support our next chapter.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Controller will own all day-to-day accounting operations and serve as the senior financial leader at iPromo. This is an execution-heavy leadership role focused on cleaning up the books, tightening controls, delivering a reliable close, and improving trust in the numbers. You will step into a fast-moving entrepreneurial environment, create order out of complexity, and build scalable processes. The ideal candidate has deep experience in a hard goods or physical products B2B distribution business and understands the financial nuances of inventory management, COGS tracking, vendor payables, sales commissions, and margin analysis in a product-based company.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Financial Reporting & Close: Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process. Prepare accurate financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) with variance analysis and KPI commentary for the CEO.
- General Ledger & Accounting Operations: Manage all GL activity, journal entries, reconciliations, and chart of accounts. Ensure GAAP compliance across all transactions.
- Accounts Payable & Vendor Management: Oversee AP to ensure timely and accurate payment of supplier invoices, manage vendor terms and credit, and reconcile vendor statements. Experience managing a large, diverse supplier base (hard goods, apparel, print) is essential.
- Accounts Receivable & Collections: Supervise AR, monitor aging, and drive collections strategy. Manage customer credit policies and work cross-functionally with sales leadership to resolve disputed invoices and chargebacks.
- Inventory & COGS Accounting: Maintain accurate inventory valuation, track landed costs, manage write-downs, and ensure COGS is properly allocated across product categories. Partner with operations (VP of Operations) on inventory reconciliation and warehouse accounting.
- Sales Commission Accounting: Calculate, verify, and process monthly sales commissions for a growing sales team. Audit commission reports for accuracy against quota plans and comp structures.
- Cash Flow & Treasury: Manage daily cash position, forecast cash flow, and optimize working capital. Monitor banking relationships, credit facilities, and payment processing (Stripe, wire transfers, ACH).
- Tax & Compliance: Coordinate with external CPA firm on federal and state income tax filings, sales tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, and annual audit/review. Manage any IRS correspondence or audits.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Partner with the CEO to build and maintain the annual operating budget. Provide rolling forecasts and scenario modeling to support hiring, revenue, and margin targets.
- Systems & Process Improvement: Evaluate and improve financial systems and workflows. Experience with or willingness to implement ERP, accounting software (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar), and integration with CRM (HubSpot) and eCommerce platforms.
- Internal Controls: Establish and enforce internal controls, approval workflows, and segregation of duties appropriate for a scaling business.
- Cleanup & Process Gaps: Identify weak controls, broken processes, and operational risk across the accounting function and fix them. Bring structure, visibility, and accountability to areas that need it.
- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA strongly preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role.
- Mandatory: Experience in a hard goods, physical products, or B2B distribution business. You must understand inventory accounting, landed cost calculations, vendor/supplier payment cycles, and product-based margin analysis. Promotional products, packaging, consumer goods, or industrial distribution experience is ideal.
- Expert-level knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and multi-entity or multi-state tax compliance.
- Strong command of Excel/Google Sheets for financial modeling, commission calculations, and data analysis.
- Experience managing AP/AR functions and a large vendor ecosystem (100+ suppliers).
- Proven ability to build or improve financial processes in a fast-growing, entrepreneurial environment.
- Track record of cleaning up messy or broken accounting processes and turning them into repeatable, reliable operating rhythms.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate financial data into business insights for a non-finance CEO.
- PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- CPA designation (active or inactive).
- Experience in the promotional products industry or adjacent sectors (branded merchandise, print, packaging, corporate gifting).
- Familiarity with HubSpot, Stripe, and eCommerce platform financials.
- Experience supporting a rapidly scaling sales organization (commission structures, quota modeling, headcount planning).
- Background in government contract accounting or RFP-based business is a plus.
- Experience with ERP implementation or migration (QuickBooks to NetSuite or similar).
- Hands-on comfort with AI tools and automation for finance workflows.
- WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive base salary [100,000$-135,000$] plus annual bonus opportunity.
- 100% remote work environment (permanent).
- Direct partnership with the CEO in a high-impact, high-visibility role.
