Research Ethics reviews: Role Description

Microsoft has an award winning research division doing cutting-edge work in labs and locations around the world. The Microsoft Research Ethics Review Program supports this global team. The Microsoft Research Ethics Review Program has a federally registered Institutional Review Board (IRB) and helps researchers planning to work with people and people’s data respect and protect the rights and welfare of human participants contributing to research. Our team draws upon the foundational principles in the Belmont Report and applies them to novel research methodologies.

This person will be responsible for conducting initial reviews of research proposals to determine whether the components of the proposed research are working with federal, state and local regulations, and Microsoft Research policies, identifying any issues for escalation to the Technical Program Manager or Board Chair. Other duties to support the Ethics Review Program include serving as an expert liaison between the research investigator and the reviewer, educating teams on relevant and emerging regulations, and assisting with creation and maintenance of internal policies and guidance documents

The team is seeking someone with a background in tech ethics and an interest in AI to join their Responsible AI (RAI) team. The role involves starting with RAI onboarding before transitioning to work on the ethics program. The ideal candidate should be familiar with IRB reviews, have strong attention to detail, mature communication skills, and program management abilities. Privacy expertise is also beneficial.

    Skills:
  • Hands on experience and/or educational background in CS or a related engineering field.
  • Hands on experience in applying ethics in practical situations. This might be as a part of community activism, volunteering, work or educational settings.
  • Background in social and behavior research. What we're doing requires a lot of flexible thinking and the ability to apply concepts to novel contexts.
  • Enough knowledge of IRB/Ethics concepts to be able to apply them.
  • Hands on experience and/or educational background in CS or a related engineering field.
  • Hands on experience in applying ethics in practical situations. This might be as a part of community activism, volunteering, work or educational settings.
  • Background in social and behavior research. So far, most of the candidates were on the clinical research side. Clinical research isn't what we do, so it's not directly applicable. And, it follows a very prescriptive process. What we're doing requires a lot of flexible thinking and the ability to apply concepts to novel contexts. That's probably more easily found in folks with SBR backgrounds.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $108,000.00 per year
