    Overview
  • This posting is for current BookNook tutors only. New applicants should apply to an open new tutor role when available/open.
  • Currently active BookNook tutor applications welcome; applications submitted at this time will be reviewed over the summer for fall, 2026 tutoring.

BookNook is seeking currently active BookNook tutors to add the reading subject to their tutoring subjects. BookNook Tutors are on the front lines of closing the early-learning gap for K-8 students during a key period of their educational journey.

    Position Specifics
  • Position Type: 1099-eligible independent contractor
  • Pay Rate: $20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session)
  • Timeline: Programming typically runs during the school year, with the busiest months from September-May
  • Availability: Especially seeking tutors available to support students between 4:00 - 6:00 PM ET.
  • Schedule: Up to 30 hours per week based on availability provided and the number of active tutoring programs. Schedules may vary based on school requests.
  • Tutoring is only on weekdays (no weekends) and can be before school, during school, or after school.
  • Program duration varies. Tutors are asked to commit to a full program with the same group of students throughout (duration will be known when series are offered).
    Responsibilities
  • Conduct virtual tutoring sessions covering vocabulary, phonics, and other science of reading elements using the BookNook platformβ€”no lesson planning required!
  • Manage student behavior and engagement throughout sessions
  • Create a safe, respectful learning environment and maintain positive relationships with students
  • Document brief student-specific end of class notes for each session
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must reside in and work from the United States, with a US mailing address.
  • Please note: BookNook is unable to engage with tutors who reside in the following states: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, as well as US territories.
  • Knowledge of and experience with reading instruction based in the science of reading.
  • Ability to build meaningful connections with students to create a motivating and encouraging environment.
  • Creativity and flexibility to meet students where they are.
  • Classroom experience and/or online teaching/tutoring experience in Reading/ELA is preferred; experience can include, but is not limited to:
  • having a current/previous teaching license
  • serving as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant, paraprofessional, professor, or instructor
  • enrollment in a teacher credential or education degree program
  • and/or tutoring for another tutoring company.
  • Access to a computer (laptop or desktop), webcam, clean and distraction-free environment, and reliable, high-speed internet connection with a speed of at least 20 mbps is a necessity for the position.
    Our Qualification Process

  • Decision β€” Receive an invite to move forward with the onboarding process or notice of application status update.
  • Certification β€” Onboarding applicants will be asked to complete a new certification course in the Tutor Community within a seven days of the certification becoming available in the portal.
