Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Varsity Tutors, a Nerdy Company, is seeking Elementary School Reading Tutors to join their Live Learning Platform. Tutors will have the flexibility to set their own schedules and make a significant impact on students' academic success through personalized online instruction.
- Responsibilities
- Provide personalized instruction to individual students
- Accept on-demand tutoring requests whenever you're available
- Skills
- Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of phonemic awareness, phonics application, fluency development, vocabulary building, reading comprehension strategies, text structure identification, and literary element recognition for developing readers
- Ability to explain decoding strategies, sight word acquisition, and comprehension monitoring while preparing elementary students for reading proficiency benchmarks and grade-level literacy standards
- Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching guided reading, fluency practice, and comprehension strategy application
- Guides students through sounding out unfamiliar words, identifying main ideas and supporting details, making predictions and inferences, retelling stories, and connecting texts to personal experiences
- Emphasizes building reading confidence and love of books while connecting reading skills to writing, science, and social studies content
- Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with elementary reading standards and science of reading principles, and common challenges such as decoding multisyllabic words, comprehending informational text, and maintaining reading stamina
- Adapts instruction using leveled readers, graphic organizers, and interactive read-alouds to support developing readers from kindergarten through fifth grade at various reading levels including struggling and advanced readers
- Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style
- Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs
